Google slap is a term that is commonly used to describe a penalty that is imposed on Google Adwords campaigns where the ads point to landing pages are not relevant to the ads at all. If Google suspects that your landing page is not relevant enough, a low quality score will be given, and your minimum bid amount will raise for some or all of the keywords you’re using.

Many squeeze pages were hit with the Google slap because the content was full of sales hype rather than being useful and informative. Pages that took a while to load were also hit with the Google slap.

If you’re looking to start an Adwords campaign, take some time to go through these guidelines so that you can avoid the Google slap. You want to pay as low of a bid as possible per keyword, so it would be in your best interest to follow these guidelines.

There are four key elements that you’ll want to implement, and be sure that they are in thematic agreement with each other and specifically targeted. The four elements are: the keyword phrase you are bidding on, the landing page, the ad copy and the search queries people use to trigger your Adwords ad.

1. Keywords. Keywords consist of a group of words or a phrase that you want to target. They are usually relevant to the product you’re promoting, and you want to make sure a lot of people use the keyword phrase when searching to buy your product.

To find the most relevant and best performing keywords for your ad campaign, start with what it is you are trying to sell and what people are searching for to find it. There are several free and subscription-based keyword research services to help you build up your keyword list. These services will help you keep adding potential keyword phrases until you have a list of about 100 different phrases to use.

When you have a nice list of keyword phrases to work with, go through and find a few keywords that have good click-through-rates (CTR) that will attract a decent amount of traffic. Make sure that they’re not too competitive, though. This is important if you’re on a tight budget because you don’t want to spend any more per click as you have to. The more competitive a keyword phrase is, the more you’re going to pay.

Check whether or not keywords are likely to deliver sales by checking their “commercial intention” at:

http://adlab.microsoft.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/

2. Landing page. You’ll want to make a landing page for each keyword phrase that you use. It’s important to place the phrase between the Title tags and the Heading tags as well as in the main body of the page.

Use unique content to fill the page and use an editorial style rather than hyped up sales language. The content should be based around the topic of the keyword phrase.

Link to the landing page from other pages on your website, but be sure to use the keyword phrase as the anchor text for your inbound links.

3. PPC ad copy. You must include the exact keyword phrase you’re using in your ad copy.

4. Search query. After your Google Adwords campaign has ran for a while you can research the actual search queries that triggered your Adwords ad and see the CTR by selecting the keywords you want to look at and clicking on “See search terms.”

If a search query is highly relevant you can add it to your list of keywords for the campaign and make a new landing page specifically for that keyword phrase.

You can also check your search queries for negative keywords as well. These are irrelevant searches that trigger your Adwords ad and are very unlikely to produce any sales. You’ll want to eliminate any unsuitable search queries from your campaign by using the “Edit Campaign Negative Keywords Tool.”

If you follow all four of these steps you will build highly relevant Adwords PPC campaigns that will most likely avoid the Google slap and keep your cost-per-click (CPC) as low as possible while improving your CTR.

Keywords: Google slap

Summary: this article looks at four steps that you need to implement to avoid the Google slap, keep your cost per click within reasonable limits and improve your click through and conversion rates.

Select whether you want to add a new domain or a profile to an existing domain (sub-domains, certain pages, etc)

Enter the URL of the site you wish to start tracking

Select your country or territory

Select your time zone

Simply click any of the blue hyperlinks to view stats

In my last article I talked about finding keywords with high commercial intention and not just keywords with a high click-through rate (CTR). The best of both worlds would be a combination of a high CTR and a high commercial intention.

After finding a keyword with a good CTR and high level of commercial intention, the next thing you want to do is write a compelling PPC ad. After you write an ad, you want to try to improve it by running a split test on your ad copy. Only test one aspect of the ad at a time. For example, split test your headline of each ad and then run a split test on the offer or main body of each ad, doing both split tests separate from each other.

Here are some tips to writing a good PPC ad.

Always bold your keyword phrase. Use your headline to offer a solution or ask a question that will grab the attention of the reader. Ad an appealing promise that offers a solution to a problem that the searcher is looking for based on the keywords they’re using. Lastly, use a call-to-action phrase that compels the reader to act as this will increase your CTR.

How can you be sure that the split test has reached a meaningful result?

You’ll want to monitor your PPC campaign every day to see how it’s doing because you want results as quickly as possible. However, it’s hard to know which ad is the leader as both ads are likely to build up impressions and clicks at different times.

This is where having a tool that will allow you to see which ad is pulling in better results can be very beneficial. A nice free tool at Splittester.com comes in handy for this. Just enter your CTR stats for your ads in the fields provided and hit the “calculate” button. SplitTester.com will tell you which ad will be the winner over the long term. What’s great about Splittester.com is that it can give you pretty reliable results after each ad has racked up just a few clicks. You should be able to save several days of waiting for a convincing result.

Let’s say your winning ad is 20% or more ahead of the loser, and Splittester.com gives you an 80% or higher probability that it is the overall winner, you can be pretty sure that it will continue to produce better results. Make your winning ad your control ad and run another split test by writing a new ad to test against the control. This process is completed until you have what’s called a super ad.

The great thing about doing this is that you can get precise results and gradually achieve a better and better CTR for your ad campaign.

Now, if you’re keyword phrase is precisely targeted, and has a high commercial intention plus a high click through rate, and if your landing page rocks, you are in a very good position to start making a lot of money with PPC advertising. Of course, you need to think about how to improve the selling power of your landing page and I will discuss that in my next article on pay per click advertising.

Keywords: pay per click advertising, split-test, split-test tool

Summary: This article looks at how you can improve the results of your pay per click advertising by running a split-test, and how you can be sure that your split test has produced a clear winner.

When setting up a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign in hopes of selling a product or service, remember that your goal is to buy customers and not just traffic. Even though finding keywords with a high click-through rate (CTR) is important, there’s more to it when it comes to keyword research.

In this article we will cover what CTR is and how to find keywords that attract more sales.

Keywords with High CTR

CTR is determined by dividing the total number of ad clicks by the number of ad impressions. Each time your ad appears on a page, this represents one ad impression. Let’s say the ad was clicked on every time it was shown. This would have a CTR of 100%. I can tell you that this never happens, though.

A high CTR can tell you how relevant a keyword is in relation to a particular search, but choosing keywords with the highest CTR won’t guarantee a successful PPC campaign. You may just want to reject the keyword phrase with the highest CTR because not every keyword phrase will be effective in converting searches into sales.

If your goal is to sell something using PPC rather than just getting more visitors to your website, then you want to buy customers instead of just traffic. While a high CTR is an important factor, you also need to find keywords which come with commercial intention behind them. This means people searching to buy something, using specific keywords to do so.

Detecting Online Commercial Intention

Not everyone searching online is looking to buy, so you need find keywords that people use when they want to buy something.

Microsoft’s Adcenter labs created a free tool that allows you to enter your keywords and check how they rate for commercial intent. Check it out here:

http://adlab.msn.com/Online-Commercial-Intention/Default.aspx

Adlabs claim that this tool can detect a customer’s intention to either get information or actually buy something based on search and surfing history. A larger than 0.5 rating means that the online commercial intent is very strong.

This tool can be used to find less common keywords that still have high commercial intention behind them. Such keywords are cheaper than many with a higher CTR, but they may be more effective in converting to sales because the people using them are likely wanting to buy the product or service.

Of course, whether or not your PPC campaign works will also depend on how relevant and well you have optimized your landing page and sales funnel. But, choosing keywords with a high CTR and a high commercial intention will certainly put you on the right track for success with a pay per click campaign.

Keywords: pay per click campaign

Summary: A high click-through rate is not the only factor when choosing keywords for your pay per click campaign. Commercial intention is also an important consideration, as this article explains.

In my last few articles in this series about e-book publishing I have covered how to make an e-book and how to build your list from it. This last article will walk you through the steps on using the best e-book website for publishing your e-books free of charge.

The best place to upload your e-books to is called upload.com.

Your e-book will be published on upload.com as well as download.cnet.com and several other high-traffic websites. People go to these websites to search for and download e-books and other digital products. Around 2.5 million downloads from the database occur each day on upload.com.

Getting your share of this pie is easy once you set up a free account on upload.com.

Here’s how to get started.

Sign up and confirm your new account. After that, you’ll have to create a developer account. Click the “My Account” tab and fill in the form to get this your account created. Upload.com will have to approve your application, but afterwards you’ll be able to publish your e-books.

Follow these 16 steps to publish your e-books on upload.com:

1. Choose “Windows” so that the system will produce an executable file of the e-book when you upload it.

2. Enter the title of your e-book. Use keyword phrases for your e-book title and use your actual book title when naming the file.

3. Enter the “version” of your e-book. You can simply enter “1″ or “1.0.”

4. Enter a release date, which can be today.

5. Write a brief description consisting of no more than 100 characters.

6. Write a full description. Include some key quotes to get the attention of the reader.

7. Select the “educational software” category and the “eBooks” subcategory.

8. Include a product information URL. This page should be a description of your e-book in detail, so you will need to create a description page on your website or blog.

9. Enter the product download URL. This is the URL of the e-book itself, which should be uploaded to your website. If you have uploaded a locked version of your e-book made by Boomerang List Builder, it will be an .exe file.

10. Input your e-book file size. This can be found by right-clicking on the e-book on your hard-drive. Click properties, and it will tell you the file size which you can then enter into the field.

11. Skip the “additional requirements” field, and in the next section, check all the boxes against the Windows platforms.

12. Enter your executable file name and your “sample registration code” number if you have locked the product, which, if you have read my complete series of e-book publishing articles, you will probably want to do.

13. You must choose a license type. Choose “free” to give away the product, and you can skip the other parts of this section.

14. Upload a screenshot of your e-book if you have one.

15. Agree to the Terms of Service and click “SAVE.”

16. Choose your listing package. If you don’t mind waiting for 5 days to have your e-book featured, choose the “Free Listing Package” option and click “PROCEED” and then “CHECKOUT”.

Once your e-book is approved and featured it will stay on upload.com forever. If you used good keywords in the title of your e-book you should start seeing a steady flow of new subscribers to your newsletter list. You’ll probably want to do this on a regular basis once you see how effective publishing e-books can be.

Keywords: publishing e-books, e-book website

Summary: In this article we look at how you can publish your e-book free of charge on one of the leading e-book websites on the Internet.

This is my third article on e-book publishing, and I will cover a product called Boomerang List Builder. Boomerang List Builder makes it easy for e-book publishers to lock their e-books. It also makes it easy for the publisher’s customers to get an access code to unlock the e-book. Boomerang List Builder allows clients to apply for the access code once they opt-in to the publisher’s newsletter list.

Here’s how the program works.

Use Boomerang List Builder to lock your e-book and upload it to your website. The process is simple, and nobody who downloads your e-book will be able to open it until they get the unlock code. When they open the e-book, a pop-up window will open asking them to enter the unlock code. Above that will be a button to click for them to get the code. When they click the button it will take them to a form on your website where they enter their name and e-mail address. The unlock code will then be e-mailed to them.

Here is a 9 step process for you to follow when using Boomerang List Builder. After each step click the “Next” button:

Step 1: Open Boomerang List Builder and find for your e-book on your hard drive.

Step 2: Enter the title of your e-book.

Step 3: Choose how you want your e-book to be locked. For most purposes, choose the “immediate registration” option.

Step 4: Enter a code. You can use a fixed code for all clients, or you can choose any code you want.

Step 5: Enter the URL of your opt-in form on your website.

Step 6: Enter an icon for your e-book if you have one. If not just skip this step.

Step 7: Enter your affiliate code if you wish to promote Boomerang List Builder alongside your e-book. If not, you can simply skip this step.

Step 8: Add a Terms of Service section if you want to add one, or simply skip this step.

Step 9: Click the Save button and you will have locked your e-book.

That’s all there is to using Boomerang List Builder. Your locked e-book will be saved to your computer so that you can upload it to your website and promote it on e-book websites and anywhere else you can think of. Whenever anybody downloads your e-book, you have a very good chance of getting that person to join your newsletter mailing list.

The next article in this series will cover suitable e-book sites for you to upload your e-book to.

Summary: This article describes how to use Boomerang List Builder, designed by Dan Thompson, to lock e-books and use them to build your list.

My previous article about e-book publishing described a four-step process for creating an e-book, locking it, uploading it to an e-book website and using it to build your e-mail list. My last article went through the process of finding PLR e-books with giveaway rights and modifying them.

At this point you should be ready to publish your e-book. You’ll want to lock it and offer those who download your e-book an unlock code. Let’s take a look at why you want to lock your e-book.

WHY YOU SHOULD LOCK YOUR E-BOOK

When a locked e-book is downloaded, the only way to open it is with an e-book unlock code. In order for them to get the code and access the e-book, they’ll have to provide their name and e-mail address. They will also have to agree to receive regular e-mail updates from the publisher, which is you. This means that if someone wants to read your e-book, they must opt into your e-mail list.

The whole e-mail newsletter process can be setup automatically using an auto-responder. This method won’t require you to set up a squeeze page. Instead, just offer an e-book as a free download and connect the client’s name and e-mail address later when they come back to get the access code.

This approach provides much less resistance to the idea of collecting an access code because the e-book has already been downloaded. They haven’t given you any personal information yet at this point. The e-book is sitting on their hard drive, and they are eager to open it.

This will also demonstrate your trustworthiness as you provided the e-book as a free download with no conditions. If your e-book has a compelling title, you will have achieved two things in giving it away: firstly, you will have stimulated the client’s curiosity, and secondly, you will have lowered the clients resistance to giving you his or her e-mail address. This method will give you a much better opt-in rate compared to a traditional squeeze page method.

GIVE AWAY YOUR BOOK AND GIVE AWAY RESALE RIGHTS

You can improve your results with this method by offering full resale rights and giveaway rights to your e-book. Don’t try to sell these rights; simply give them away free with every download. Be sure to let your clients know that they can sell the e-book at any price they like and keep 100% of the profits, or they could just give it away free if they want.

You want to get as many of your clients to distribute your e-book as possible. Every time somebody downloads your e-book they will have to come to you to get the unlock code. That means that they will be added to your e-mail mailing list. So, if you have twenty, fifty, or 100 people selling or giving away your e-book, your mailing list will grow fast and increase your profits from selling to them through backend sales. This is why you’re able to offer giveaway rights to your e-books.

My next article on e-book publishing will talk about the best way for you to lock your e-book.

Keywords: e-book publishing, e-book unlock code

Summary: In this e-book publishing article I look at how to lock your e-book and why you would want to have your clients request an e-book unlock code.

E-book publishing is very easy. With only a couple of hours of work involved, you can have an e-book created, published and uploaded to a high traffic e-book website. Use your e-book to build your email contact list so that you can promote your online business to those leads. Your e-book will continue to generate leads for you day after day without you having to do anything else.

Once you see how easy e-book publishing can be, you’ll want to do it again and again.

These are the steps to make this work for you.

1. Give away your e-book.

2. Make your e-book lockable.

3. Find the best places on the internet to upload your e-book to.

4. Use an auto-responder to collect the names and e-mail addresses of leads you gather from giving away your e-books.

Let’s expand on these points and fill in some details. This article will cover how you can quickly make an e-book, publish it and giving it away.

If you have already written an e-book, you might want to use that. Don’t worry if you haven’t written one or find the idea of writing an e-book too daunting. The quickest way to get an e-book published is to find some “Private Label Rights” (PLR) products that come with giveaway rights. You can find numerous products by doing an easy Google search. When you find an e-book that you want to use, make sure it comes with giveaway rights. A PLR e-book with no giveaway rights won’t do you any good at all.

When you have found a suitable product for your niche market, download it to your hard drive, unzip it and check to make sure that everything is there. A good quality PLR e-book will probably include a text version of the book as a Word document so that you can easily modify it. Before you go ahead and make any changes, you will want to read through the book carefully to make sure that it is a good quality product. Look for errors, typos and anything that doesn’t make sense. You don’t want to give away junk as this will ultimately hurt your online business.

What should you modify?

You’ll want to first change the title of the e-book. Be sure to include your most important keyword phrase. It is essential to get the title right to attract a great amount of targeted traffic, so take some time to think about the keywords you use in your title.

Next, you’ll want to add your name to the title page of the e-book. You could also add an introductory paragraph where you use your name, and also place your name and website link at the end of the book. A footer would be a good place to put this information in your e-book

Think about any other place in the e-book where you could add a link to your website, or to a specific page of your site.

Once your modifications are completed, convert the modified Word document to a PDF file with Adobe Acrobat. If you don’t have Word and Adobe you can do everything using openoffice.org.

Once you have completed these steps, you’ll have an e-book to promote your online business with. My next article will discuss how and why you should lock your e-book. Locking your e-book is an essential part of the e-book publishing technique that I will be discussing. I will then show you which e-book website to upload your e-book to for best results.

Keywords: e-book website, e-book publishing

Summary: E-book publishing is not as difficult as you may think. In this article I outline the steps you need to take and explain how to produce an e-book quickly and easily.
